Claude Monet


OscarClaude Monet was a founder of French Impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movements philosophy of expressing ones perceptions before nature, especially as applied to pleinair landscape painting. The term Impressionism is derived from the title of his painting Impression, soleil levant , which was exhibited in 1874 in the first of the independent exhibitions mounted by Monet and his associates as an alternative to the Salon de Paris.

Claude Monet was born onNovember 1840 on the fifth floor of 45 rue Laffitte, in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. He was the second son of Claude Adolphe Monet and Louise Justine Aubre Monet, both of them secondgeneration Parisians. OnMay 1841, he was baptized in the local parish church, NotreDamedeLorette, as OscarClaude, but his parents called him simply Oscar. Despite being baptized Catholic, Monet later became an atheist.
