Edward H. Ripley


Edward Hastings Ripley was a Vermont businessman and Union Army officer in the American Civil War. He attained the rank of brevet brigadier general while commanding brigades in the XVIII and XXIV Corps, and led the first troops to enter Richmond after its surrender.

Edward H. Ripley was born in Rutland, Vermont on November 11, 1839. He was educated locally and at Troy Conference Academy in Poultney . He attended Union College from 1858 to 1862, and was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity.
