Ferdinand Magellan

Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who organised the Castilian expedition to the East Indies from 1519 to 1522, resulting in the first circumnavigation of the Earth.

Magellan was born in northern Portugal in around 1480, either at Vila Nova de Gaia, near Porto, in Douro Litoral Province, or at Sabrosa, near Vila Real, in TrsosMontes e Alto Douro Province. He was the son of Rodrigo de Magalhes, AlcaideMor of Aveiro and wife Alda de Mesquita and brother of Leonor or Genebra de Magalhes, wife with issue of Joo Fernandes Barbosa. After the death of his parents during his tenth year, he became a page to Queen Leonor at the Portuguese royal court because of his familys heritage.
