Henry Avray Tipping was a Frenchborn British writer on country houses and gardens, a garden designer, and Architectural Editor of Country Life magazine foryears.
Tipping was born in the Chteau de VilledAvray near Versailles, while his parents were living in France before moving into Brasted Place in Kent, where he grew up. He belonged to a Quaker Christian family of businessmen, who had prospered in the corn trade in Liverpool. His father, William Tipping , was a railway company owner and amateur archaeologist and artist, who served as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Stockport between 186874 and 188586. His mother Maria was the daughter of a flax mill owner from Leeds.
