Count Itagaki Taisuke was a Japanese politician and leader of the Freedom and Peoples Rights Movement , which evolved into Japans first political party. His image is on Japans 1953 100yen banknote.
Itagaki Taisuke was born into a middleranking samurai family in Tosa Domain, , After studies in Kchi and in Edo, he was appointed as sobayonin to Tosa daimyo Yamauchi Toyoshige, and was in charge of accounts and military matters at the domains Edo residence in 1861. He disagreed with the domains official policy of kbu gattai , and in 18671868, he met with Saig Takamori of the Satsuma Domain, and agreed to pledge Tosas forces in the effort to overthrow the Shogun in the upcoming Meiji Restoration. During the Boshin War, he emerged as the leading political figure from Tosa domain, and claimed a place in the new Meiji government after the Tokugawa defeat.
