Lavrentiy Beria


Lavrentiy Pavlovich Beria December 1953 was a Soviet politician of Georgian ethnicity, Marshal of the Soviet Union and state security administrator, chief of the Soviet security and secret police apparatus under Joseph Stalin during World War II, and Deputy Premier in the postwar years .

Beria was born in Merkheuli, near Sukhumi, in the Sukhumi district of Kutaisi Governorate . He was from Mingrelian subethnic group of Georgians and grew up in a Georgian Orthodox family. Berias mother, Marta Jaqeli , was a deeply religious, churchgoing woman she was previously married and widowed before marrying Berias father, Pavel Khukhaevich Beria , a landowner from Abkhazia. He also had a brother , and a sister named Anna, who was born deafmute. In his autobiography, Lavrentiy Beria mentioned only his sister and his niece, implying that his brother either was dead or had no relationship with Beria after he left Merkheuli. Beria attended a technical school in Sukhumi, and joined the Bolsheviks in March 1917 while a student in the Baku Polytechnicum . As a student, Beria distinguished himself in mathematics and the sciences. The Polytechnicums curriculum concentrated on the petroleum industry.
