Lviv Polish Lww , IPA160 160 Russian , Lvov , IPA160 German Lemberg , Latin Leopolis, the city of the lion, the largest city in western Ukraine and the seventh largest city in the country overall, is one of the main cultural centres of Ukraine. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Ruthenia from 1272 before being incorporated into the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland in 1339 and becoming the regional capital of the Ruthenian Voivodeship, then renamed Lemberg in 1772 as the capital of the Habsburg Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. Administratively, Lviv serves as the administrative center of Lviv Oblast and has the status of city of oblast significance. Its population is 729,429 .

Flute virtuoso and composer Albert Franz Doppler was born and spent his formative years here, including flute lessons from his father. The classical pianist Mieczysaw Horszowski was born here. The opera diva Salomea Kruszelnicka called Lviv her home in the 1920s to 1930s. The classical violinist Adam Han Gorski was born here in 1940. Polish Radio Lww was a Polish radio station that went onair onJanuary 1930. The programme proved very popular in Poland. Classical music and entertainment was aired as well as lectures, readings, youthprogrammes, news and liturgical services on Sunday.
