Francisco Gustavo Snchez Gomez , known as Paco de Luca , was a Spanish virtuoso flamenco guitarist, composer and producer. A leading proponent of the new flamenco style, he helped legitimize flamenco among the establishment in Spain, and was one of the first flamenco guitarists to have successfully crossed over into other genres of music such as classical and jazz. Richard Chapman and Eric Clapton, authors of Guitar Music, History, Players, describe de Luca as a titanic figure in the world of flamenco guitar, and Dennis Koster, author of Guitar Atlas, Flamenco, has referred to de Luca as one of historys greatest guitarists.
Paco de Luca was born onDecember 1947 as Francisco Snchez Gomez in Algeciras, a city near the far southern point of Spain in the province of Cdiz. He was the youngest of the five children of flamenco guitarist Antonio Snchez Pecino and Portuguese mother Lcia Gomez his brothers include flamenco singer Pepe de Luca and flamenco guitarist Ramn de Algeciras . Playing in the streets as a young boy, there were many Pacos and Pablos in Algeciras, and he wanted to honor his Portuguese mother Lucia Gomez, so he adopted the stage name Paco de Luca.
