Alan Shepard


Rear Admiral Alan Bartlett Al Shepard, Jr., was an American naval officer and aviator, test pilot, one of the original NASA Mercury Seven astronauts, and businessman, who in May 1961 became the second person and first American to travel into space. This Mercury flight was designed to enter space, but not to achieve orbit.

Alan Bartlett Shepard, Jr., was born on November 18, 1923, in Derry, New Hampshire, the oldest of two children of Alan B. Shepard, Sr., and Pauline Renza Shepard . He was one of many famous descendants of Mayflower passenger Richard Warren. Alan B. Shepard, Sr., known as Bart, worked in the Derry National Bank, owned by Shepards grandfather. He joined the National Guard in 1915 and served in France with the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. He remained in the National Guard between the wars, and was recalled to active duty during World War II, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Shepard had a younger sister, Pauline, who was known as Polly.
