Alexis Tsipras

Alexis Tsipras is the 185th and current Prime Minister of Greece, having been sworn in onSeptember 2015. He previously served as the 183rd Prime Minister of Greece fromJanuary 2015 toAugust 2015. Tsipras has been leader of the leftwing Greek political party Syriza sinceOctober 2009.

Tsipras was born in Athens in 1974. He joined the Communist Youth of Greece in the late 1980s and in the 1990s was politically active in student protests against education reform plans, becoming the movements spokesperson. He studied civil engineering at the National Technical University of Athens, graduating in 2000, and later undertook postgraduate studies in urban and regional planning. He worked as a civil engineer in the construction industry, based primarily in Athens.
