Bayard Rustin was an American leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, nonviolence, and gay rights. He was born and raised in Pennsylvania, where his family was involved in civil rights work. In 1936, he moved to Harlem, New York City, where he earned a living as a nightclub and stage singer. He continued activism for civil rights.
Rustin was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania to Florence Rustin and Archie Hopkins to a life of privilege. He was the youngest ofchildren and growing up his older sister was actually his mother. He was raised by his maternal grandparents , Julia and Janifer Rustin. Both were local caterers who raised Rustin in a large mansion. Julia Rustin was a Quaker, although she attended her husbands African Methodist Episcopal Church. She was also a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People . NAACP leaders such as W.E.B. Du Bois and James Weldon Johnson were frequent guests in the Rustin home. With these influences in his early life, in his youth Rustin campaigned against racially discriminatory Jim Crow laws.
