Bolesaw the Pious was a Duke of Greater Poland during 12391247 , Duke of Kalisz during 12471249, Duke of Gniezno during 12491250, Duke of GnieznoKalisz during 12531257, Duke of whole Greater Poland and Pozna during 12571273, in 1261 ruler over Ld, regent of the Duchies of Mazovia, Pock and Czersk during 12621264, ruler over Bydgoszcz during 12681273, Duke of Inowrocaw during 12711273, and Duke of GnieznoKalisz from 1273 until his death.

OnJune 1257 Przemys I died, aged only 36. With his brothers death, new horizons opened to Bolesaw. He became in the undisputed sole ruler over the whole of Greater Poland. Although the posthumous son of his brother, Przemys II, was born onOctober of that year, Boleslaw was his guardian until he was declared an adult. The first of Bolesaws new foreign politics was his marriage in 1258 to Princess Jolenta , daughter of King Bla IV of Hungary. This union resulted in a permanent bond between Bolesaw and Hungary, reflected in the assistance given in the conflict with Bohemia after the extinction of the House of Babenberg. For Bolesaw, this alliance cost him the complete devastation of Greater Poland during the winter of 12671268 by troops of King Ottokar II of Bohemia during his return from an expedition against the Prussians.
