Chief Joseph

Hinmahtooyahlatkekt, Hinmatowyalahtqit in Americanist orthography, popularly known as Chief Joseph or Young Joseph , succeeded his father Tuekakas as the leader of the Wallamwatkain band of Nez Perce, a Native American tribe indigenous to the Wallowa Valley in northeastern Oregon, in the interior Pacific Northwest region of the United States.

Chief Joseph was born Hinmuuttuyalatlat , or Hinmatoyalahtqit in the Wallowa Valley of north eastern Oregon. He was known as Young Joseph during his youth because his father, Tuekakas, was baptized with the same Christian name and later become known as Old Joseph or Joseph the Elder.
