David

David was, according to the Books of Samuel, the second king of the United Kingdom of Israel and Judah, and according to the New Testament, an ancestor of Jesus. His life is conventionally dated to c. 1040 970 BCE, his reign over Judah c. 1010970 BCE.

David seduces Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite, and encompasses the death of Uriah but the thing that David had done displeased the Lord. Nathan prophesies the punishment that shall fall upon him the sword shall never depart from your house, the son born to you will die, and God will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight. The infant born to Bathsheba dies as Nathan has prophesied. The remaining parts of the prophecy follow. Davids son Absalom rebels, David flees Jerusalem, and Absalom has a tent pitched on the palace roof in which he takes his fathers consorts. The rebellion ends at the battle of the Wood of Ephraim Absaloms forces are routed, and Absalom is caught by his hair in the branches of a tree and killed by Joab, the commander of Davids army. David is griefstricken and laments, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!
