Dilma Rousseff


Dilma Vana Rousseff is a Brazilian economist and politician currently serving as the 36th President of Brazil, the first woman to hold that office. She was previously the Chief of Staff of the President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva from 2005 to 2010. Following the commencement of procedures of her impeachment trial onMay 2016, her presidential powers and duties have been removed until her Senate trial ends.

Dilma Vana Rousseff was born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, onDecember 1947, to Bulgarian lawyer and entrepreneur Pedro Rousseff and schoolteacher Dilma Jane da Silva. Her father was born in Gabrovo, Principality of Bulgaria, and was a friend of the Nobel Prizenominated Bulgarian poet Elisaveta Bagryana. As an active member of the Bulgarian Communist Party, banned in 1924, Petar Rusev fled Bulgaria in 1929 to escape political persecution he settled in France. He arrived in Brazil in the 1930s, already widowed , but soon moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina. He returned to Brazil several years later, settling in So Paulo, where he succeeded in business.
