LaDonna Adrian Gaines , known by her stage name Donna Summer, was an American singer, songwriter, and painter. She gained prominence during the disco era of the late1970s. A fivetime Grammy Award winner, she was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach No.on the United States Billboard album chart and charted four numberone singles in the U.S. within a 12month period. Summer has reportedly sold over 140 million records, making her one of the worlds bestselling artists of all time. She also charted two numberone singles on the RampB charts in the U.S. and one numberone in the U.K.
Summer was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to Andrew and Mary Gaines, and was one of seven children. She was raised in the Boston neighborhood of Mission Hill. Her father was a butcher and her mother was a schoolteacher.
