Erich Honecker


Erich Honecker was a German politician who, as the General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party, led the German Democratic Republic from 1971 until the weeks preceding the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. From 1976 onward he was also the countrys official Head of State as Chairman of the State Council following Willi Stophs relinquishment of the post.

Honecker was born in Neunkirchen, in what is now Saarland, as the son of Wilhelm Honecker , a coal miner and political activist, who had married Caroline Catharina Weidenhof in 1905. The couple had six children together Katharina , Wilhelm , Frieda , Erich, Gertrud and KarlRobert . Erich, their fourth child, was born onAugust 1912 during the period in which the family resided on MaxBraunStrae, before later moving to Kuchenbergstrae 88 in the presentday Neunkirchen city district of Wiebelskirchen.
