Ernest Gellner


Ernest Andr Gellner was a BritishCzech philosopher and social anthropologist described by The Daily Telegraph, when he died, as one of the worlds most vigorous intellectuals, and by The Independent as a oneman crusade for critical rationalism.

Gellner was born in Paris to Anna, ne Fantl, and Rudolf, a lawyer, an urban intellectual Germanspeaking Jewish couple from Bohemia . Julius Gellner was his uncle. He was brought up in Prague, attending a Czech language primary school before entering the Englishlanguage grammar school. This was Franz Kafkas tricultural Prague antisemitic but stunningly beautiful, a city he later spent years longing for.
