Vuk Karadi considered him the best ballad writer and singer of his time.

He was born at Vilia Guvno in Gornja Trnova near Ugljevik, in the Eyalet of Bosnia of the Ottoman Empire , and died in the village of Grk near id, Serbia . Filip Vinjis true surname was Vili. According to some authors, he was called Vinji either after his mothers name Vinja, or after the Vinjica quarter of Meai, where he lived until he moved to Serbia.
