He was the son of Christian III of PalatinateZweibrcken and Caroline of NassauSaarbrcken and a member of the House of PalatinateZweibrckenBirkenfeld, a branch of the House of Wittelsbach. He was the father of the Bavarian King Maximilian I Joseph.
