George Alencherry


His Beatitude Cardinal Maran Mar George Alencherry is the current Major Archbishop of the SyroMalabar Catholic Church and the Archbishop of the SyroMalabar Catholic Major Archeparchy of ErnakulamAngamaly. He was elected by the Holy Synod of the SyroMalabar Church onMay 2011 to succeed Maran Mar Varkey Vithayathil. He was created a Cardinal of the Catholic Church and the titular Archpriest of San Bernardo alle Terme in Rome onFebruary 2012 in Rome.

George Alencherry was born onApril 1945 as the sixth child of Philipose and Mary Alencherry in Thuruthy in the SyroMalabar Catholic Archeparchy of Changanassery. Geevarghese is his baptismal name. Mar Alencherry had his primary schooling at St Marys School, Thuruthy and secondary education at St Berchmans High School, Changanacherry. He began his priestly formation in 1961 at the archdiocesan minor seminary at Parel, Changanacherry. While he pursued his studies in the minor seminary, he obtained his BA in economics with second rank from St Berchmans College. After the minor seminary studies he was sent to St Josephs Pontifical Seminary, Aluva where he completed his philosophical and theological studies.
