After the war, George Smith married Elizabeth Francis Barella Fannie Spencer who was born in 1842. After he sold two bales of hay he left behind before the war for 2000 each he bought a farm in Pinelog Hill, Georgia. They had their first child there, Thomas, in October 1867. Georges family had to obtain affidavits from people with whom he had served to prove he had not deserted, in order to qualify for his pension.
