Gopinath Pandurang Munde was an Indian politician from Maharashtra. He was a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Union Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj in Narendra Modis Cabinet, which, however, was shortlived due to his death in a road accident. He was a member of Maharashtras Legislative Assembly for five terms during 19801985 and 19902009. He was also the leader of opposition in the Assembly during 19921995. He had held the post of Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra in 19951999. Munde was elected to Lok Sabha in 2009 and 2014, and served as the deputy leader of the BJP in the Lok Sabha. He was appointed in Modis cabinet and took the oath onMay, but died in a road accident in New Delhi a week later onJune 2014. He is the shortest served Cabinet minister ever in Indian history.
Munde was born in Parali, Maharashtra, onDecember 1949, to Pandurang and Limbabai Munde in a middle class Vanjari caste farmers family.
