Halle Maria Berry is an American actress, film producer, and former fashion model. She won an Academy Award for Best Actress in 2002 for her performance in the romantic drama Monsters Ball , which made her the only woman of color to win a Best Actress Academy Award to date, as of 2016.
Berry was born Maria Halle Berry her name was legally changed to Halle Maria Berry at age five. Her parents selected her middle name from Halles Department Store, which was then a local landmark in her birthplace of Cleveland, Ohio. Her mother, Judith Ann , who is of English and German ancestry, was a psychiatric nurse. Her father, Jerome Jesse Berry, was an AfricanAmerican hospital attendant in the psychiatric ward where her mother worked he later became a bus driver. Berrys maternal grandmother, Nellie Dicken, was born in Sawley, Derbyshire, England, while her maternal grandfather, Earl Ellsworth Hawkins, was born in Ohio. Berrys parents divorced when she was four years old she and her older sister, Heidi BerryHenderson, were raised exclusively by their mother.
