Harold Holt


Harold Edward Holt, CH , was an Australian politician and the 17th Prime Minister of Australia. Holt spentyears in Parliament, including many years as a senior Cabinet Minister, but was Prime Minister for onlymonths before he disappeared in December 1967 while swimming at Cheviot Beach near Portsea, Victoria, and was presumed drowned.

Born in Stanmore, New South Wales onAugust 1908, Holt was the elder son of Thomas and Olive . He and his brother Cliff , spent their early life in Sydney, attending three different schools. In 1918, Thomas Holt divorced Olive and went to work with the Hugh D. McIntosh, manager of the Tivoli theatre circuit. He later became the TivoliJ C Williamson representative in London and New York. Meanwhile, he enrolled his sons as boarders at Wesley College in Melbourne.
