Helen Zille

Otta Helene Helen Zille is a South African politician. She is the current Premier of the Western Cape , a member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament, the former leader of South Africas opposition Democratic Alliance political party, and a former Mayor of Cape Town.

Helen Zille was born in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, the eldest child of parents who separately left Germany in the 1930s to avoid Nazi persecution . Her fathers uncle was the artist Heinrich Zille. Her mother was a volunteer with the Black Sash Advice Office. She was educated at Johannesburgs St Marys School, Waverley while her family at the time lived in Rivonia. She studied at the University of the Witwatersrand, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree.
