Henry Dunant


Jean Henri Dunant also known as Henry Dunant was the founder of the Red Cross, and the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. The 1864 Geneva Convention was based on Dunants ideas. In 1901 he received the first Nobel Peace Prize together with Frdric Passy, making Dunant the first Swiss Nobel laureate.

Dunant was born in Geneva, Switzerland, the first son of businessman JeanJacques Dunant and Antoinette DunantColladon. His family was devoutly Calvinist and had significant influence in Geneva society. His parents stressed the value of social work, and his father was active helping orphans and parolees, while his mother worked with the sick and poor. His father worked in a prison and an orphanage.
