Henry IV of France


Henry IV , also known by the epithet Good King Henry, was King of Navarre from 1572 to 1610 and King of France from 1589 to 1610. He was the first French monarch of the House of Bourbon, a branch of the Capetian dynasty.

Henry was born in Pau, the capital of the joint Kingdom of Navarre with the sovereign principality of Barn. His parents were Queen Joan III of Navarre and her consort, Antoine de Bourbon, Duke of Vendme, King of Navarre. Although baptised as a Roman Catholic, Henry was raised as a Protestant by his mother, who had declared Calvinism the religion of Navarre. As a teenager, Henry joined the Huguenot forces in the French Wars of Religion. OnJune 1572, upon his mothers death, he became King of Navarre.
