Hilandar


The Hilandar Monastery is the Serbian Orthodox monastery on Mount Athos in Greece. It was founded in 1198 by first Archbishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church Saint Sava and his father, Serbian Grand Prince and founder of the Nemanji dynasty Stefan Nemanja, who, after relinquishing his government duties, became a simple monk Symeon at Hilandar. It has been the focal point of Serbian religious and secular culture, and the first Serbian university. It is ranked fourth in the Athonite hierarchy ofsovereign monasteries. The Mother of God through her Icon of Three Hands , is considered the abbess.
