Huseinkapetan Gradaevi was a Bosniak general who fought against the Ottoman Empire and new reforms implemented by the Sultan Mahmud II which abolished the ayan system. He is often referred to as Zmaj od Bosne, meaning the Dragon of Bosnia. Gradaevi was born in Gradaac in 1802hence his surname Gradaevi, meaning of Gradaacand grew up surrounded by a political climate of turmoil in the western reaches of the Ottoman Empire. The young Husein developed a reputation for wise rule and tolerance and soon became one of the most popular figures in Bosnia.
Husein was born to Osman and his wife Melekhanuma in 1802 in the Gradaevi family house in Gradaac. Outside of family tradition and folklore invented much later, little is known of his childhood. It is said that he spent much time around the family fort while it was undergoing renovations. He grew up during turbulent times and taking into account his fathers military experience and brother Osmans services during the 1813 war against Serbia, young Husein surely heard many first hand accounts that shaped his personality.
