Isabel Bishop


Isabel Bishop was an American painter and graphic artist who depicted urban scenes of Union Square, New York, from the 1930s to the 1970s. She is best known for her depiction of American women and as a leading member of the Fourteenth Street School of artists.

Bishop was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up in Detroit, Michigan, before moving to New York City at the age ofto study illustration at the New York School of Applied Design for Women. Bishops parents were descended from old, wealthy and highly educated East Coast mercantile families. Her Father was a scholar of Greek and Latin, and her mother was an aspiring writer as well as an early activist for womens suffrage.
