James Coey


Major James Coey was an American soldier who fought in the American Civil War. Coey received the countrys highest award for bravery during combat, the Medal of Honor, for his action during the Battle of Hatchers Run in Virginia onFebruary 1865. He was honored with the award onMay 1892.

Coey was born in Oswego, New York onFebruary 1841. He joined the 147th New York Infantry in September 1862, and mustered ou with the regiment in June 1865. Coey died onJuly 1918 and his remains are interred at the San Francisco National Cemetery.
