Kevin Maurice Johnson is the current mayor of Sacramento, the capital city of the U.S. state of California, and the husband of Michelle Rhee. Elected in 2008 and reelected in 2012, Johnson is the first African American to serve in that office. Prior to entering politics, Johnson was a professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association , playing point guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Phoenix Suns.
Johnson, the son of Georgia West and Lawrence Johnson, was born March 4, 1966, in Sacramento. After his father died in a boating accident when he was three, Johnson was raised by his grandparents, the Peat family. He attended Sacramento High School, where he starred in both baseball and basketball. In his senior year, Johnson led the state of California in scoring and was named the Northern California Player of the Year.
