Madeleine Albright


Madeleine Jana Korbel Albright is an American politician and diplomat. She is the first woman to have become the United States Secretary of State. She was nominated by U.S. President Bill Clinton on December 5, 1996, and was unanimously confirmed by a U.S. Senate vote of 990. She was sworn in on January 23, 1997.

Marie Jana Korbelov was born in 1937 in the Smchov district of Prague, Czechoslovakia to Czech diplomat Josef Korbel and Anna Spieglov. At the time of her birth, Czechoslovakia had been independent for fewer thanyears, having gained independence from AustriaHungary after World War I. Josef was a supporter of the early Czech democrats Tom Garrigue Masaryk and Edvard Bene. Madeleine grew up with a younger sister named Katherine and a younger brother named John.
