Blessed MarieClmentine Anuarite Nengapeta was a member of the Holy Family Sisters in Bafwabaka, Belgian Congo, respectively Republic of the Congo . She was killed during Congos civil war at the Simba revolt in 1964 by a soldier, Colonel Pierre Colombe, when she resisted his attempted rape. She was beatified on August 15, 1985 by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Africa. She was the first Bantu woman elevated to the altars. Her memorial isDecember.
Anuarite was born in Wamba on December 29, 1939. She belonged to the Wabudu tribe. Her fathers name was Amisi Batsuru Batobobo and her mothers Isude Julienne. After having six daughtersAnuarite was the fourth oneher father, a former soldier, dismissed his wife in order to take another wife by whom he might have a son. Anuarites parents were heathens. Nevertheless, her mother was baptized the same day she was in 1945. Anuarites baptism name was Alphonsine. It seems she was even baptized twice simply because her original certificate of baptism was lost.
