Neville McNamara


Air Chief Marshal Sir Neville Patrick McNamara, KBE, AO, AFC, AE was a senior commander of the Royal Australian Air Force . He served as Chief of the Air Staff , the RAAFs highestranking position, from 1979 until 1982, and as Chief of the Defence Force Staff , Australias top military role at the time, from 1982 until 1984. He was the second RAAF officer to hold the rank of air chief marshal.

Neville Patrick McNamara was born on 17160April 1923 in Toogoolawah, Queensland. He was educated at Toogoolawah State School, and by the Christian Brothers in Warwick and at St. Josephs Nudgee College. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on 12160October 1941. Following aircrew training, he graduated as a sergeant pilot on 15160October 1942. He served as an instructor before being posted to the South West Pacific as a fighter pilot with No.16075 Squadron, flying P40 Kittyhawks. He gained his commission in 1944.
