No Smoking is a 2007 Indian neonoir psychological thriller film written and directed by Anurag Kashyap and coproduced by Vishal Bhardwaj and Kumar Mangat. The film stars John Abraham, Ayesha Takia, Ranvir Shorey and Paresh Rawal in the lead roles, while Bipasha Basu appears in an Item number. The film is loosely based upon the short story Quitters, Inc. by Stephen King, which was previously adapted as one of three segments featured in Hollywood anthology film, Cats Eye 1985. It became the first Indian film to be adapted from a Stephen King short story. The story follows K Abraham a selfobsessed, narcissist chain smoker who agrees to kick his habit to save his marriage and visits a rehabilitation centre, but is caught in a labyrinth game by Baba Bengali Rawal, the man who guarantees he will make him quit.
The story is about a man known only as K John Abraham, who is in his 30s and is a heavy chainsmoker. He is very confident in himself and very arrogant in nature. K is also revealed to have smoked spiked ganja marijuana and landed up in hospital due to it. His wellwishers have tried to make him quit but to no avail. Both his friends, Abbas Tyrewala Ranvir Shorey and the doctor who treats Ks brother played by Karan Makhija, offer to set up an appointment at a rehabilitation center called Prayogshaala The Laboratory, which they claim will rid K of his dreadful habit. K finally relents after his wife Anjali Ayesha Takia leaves him, unable to take the strain Ks smoking places on their relationship.K decides to check out Prayogshaala, and meets Shri Shri Prakash Guru Ghantal Baba Bengali Sealdahwale Paresh Rawal, the man who is to save him. When he gets to Kalkatta Karpets, the front for the unconventional rehab center, his Labyrinthesque adventure starts. The method Prayogshaala uses to cure their patients of their addiction is fear. Each time a patient gives in to their vice, Baba makes sure that something shocking happens to them. ........
