Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople
Bartholomew I is the 270th and current Archbishop of Constantinople and Ecumenical Patriarch, sinceNovember 1991. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, he is regarded as the primus inter pares , and as the spiritual leader of the worlds 300 million Orthodox Christians.
Bartholomew I was born in the village of Zeytinli in the island of Gkeada , son of Christos and Merope Archontnis. His secular birth name is Dimitrios Arhondonis . He is a Turkish citizen, but he belongs to the historically indigenous Greek community in Turkey, which today is diminished and reduced due to the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey.
