Petra Kvitov%C3%A1


Petra Kvitov is a Czech professional tennis player. Having turned professional in 2006, she is known for her powerful lefthanded groundstrokes and variety. Kvitov has won seventeen career singles titles including two Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon. She reached her careerhigh ranking of world no.onOctober 2011 and is ranked world no.by the Womens Tennis Association as ofMay 2016. As such, Kvitov is the current Czech numberand the second highestranked lefthanded player in the WTA behind Germanys Angelique Kerber.

Kvitov first caused major waves by defeating then world no.Dinara Safina in the third round of the 2009 US Open. This was followed by her first Grand Slam semifinal appearance at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships where she came up short to eventual champion Serena Williams. Then, during her breakthrough season in 2011, Kvitov won her first Grand Slam title at the Wimbledon Championships, defeating Maria Sharapova in the final, thus becoming the first and currently the only Grand Slam event winner of either gender born in the 1990s. She also won the 2011 WTA Tour Championships, thus becoming one of the three players to win the WTA Tour Championships on debut, the others being Williams and Sharapova. She also helped lead the Czech Republic to victory in the Fed Cup final that same year. It was the Czech Republics first Fed Cup title as an independent nation.
