The Other Song
The Other Song is a documentary film directed by Saba Dewan. It is made on life of Rasoolan Bai, a tawaif or courtesan. It features her more famous song, Lagat karejwa ma chot, phool gendwa na maar, a 1935 Gramophone recording. It was produced with a grant from India Foundation for the Arts IFA.
The story is that of a lost semiclassical Thumri song, Lagat Karejwa ma Chot, Phool Gendwa na Maar, sung in 1935 by Rasoolan Bai, the well known singer from Varanasi. The film shows in detail that tawaifs were not mere sex workers, but were great artistes who contributed to music, dance, theatre, film and the Urdu literary tradition.
