Warren Beatty has written and directed an upcoming 2016 American romantic drama film. Set in 1950s Hollywood, the film follows business magnate Howard Hughes as he enters into an affair with a much younger actress. The allstar ensemble cast, including Beatty portraying the role of Hughes, features Alden Ehrenreich, Lily Collins, Matthew Broderick, Martin Sheen, Candice Bergen, Taissa Farmiga, Chace Crawford, Annette Bening, Ed Harris, and Alec Baldwin.

On June 20, 2011, Paramount Pictures announced that Warren Beatty will write, direct and star in an upcoming untitled film, his first directorial effort since 1998s Bulworth and his first acting role since 2001s Town amp Country. Beatty had been working on a biopic based on Howard Hughes life for more thanyears, after meeting him in a hotel lobby in the early 1970s, and being fascinated by the business magnate. On September 16, 2011, Paramount dropped the project and New Regency Pictures picked it up. The film then stayed in the development stages for almost three years. On February 24, 2014, it was reported that New Regency and RatPac Entertainment are producing and financing the film, with an estimatedmillion budget.On June 22, 2011, it was announced that Beatty was looking for an ensemble cast for the film, with him playing the role of Howard Hughes. He met with actors Andrew Garfield, Alec Baldwin, Annette Bening, Shia LaBeouf, Jack Nicholson, Evan Rachel Wood, and Rooney Mara to costar. On November 14, 2011, Felicity Jones was added to the cast of the film to play the female lead, but later dropped out of the role due to production delays. Justin Timberlake and Alden Ehrenreich were up for male lead, while Bening, Nicholson, Baldwin, and Owen Wilson were rumored for other roles. Almost three years later, on February 24, 2014, it was announced that Ehrenreich, Lily Collins, Matthew Broderick, and Bening had been cast in the film Ehrenreich is portraying Hughes driver Frank Forbes, and Collins his love interest. On February 27, 2014, it was reported that Candice Bergen had joined the ensemble cast, portraying Hughes secretary Nadine Henly. On March 6, 2014, Martin Sheen was cast in an unknown role. That same month, Chace Crawford was added to the cast in an unknown role. He was seen on the set of the film with Collins in late March. Taissa Farmiga later joined the cast.
